Google I/O Conference 2013 LIVE: 900 Million Android Device Activations; 48 Billion App Installs

The keynote was opened by Sundar Pichai who spoke of the growing Android market, “Android started with a simple goal to bring open standards to the world. Today, it is the most popular mobile operating system in the world.”

Some of the remarkable facts presented included:

  • Android activations are a remarkable increase from the 400 million activations last year. At certain points Android was getting 1 million activations a day. He illustrated the point with a picture of St. Peters square, a "sea of phones capturing that moment," Pichai said, "The world has changed pretty dramatically in the span of 6-7 years.

  • Android apps received an even great amount of love, according to Hugo Barra:
  • GooGoogle Play has delivered 48 billion application installs to date, and 2.5 billion in the last month alone. #io13   #keynote   #io13android

Finally Pichai concluded by pointing out that there were 7 billion people in the world and there were numerous emerging markets in Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Latin America where Android penetration was only 10% or less of the market. Pichai indicated that in the future Android would be targeting these markets for growth.
