Apple Revealed The New Mac File System

Jun 06, 2017 07:12 PM EDT

Apple recently revealed that the latest macOS system High Sierra will run Apple File System (AFPS) during WWDC developer conference. Apple stated that High Sierra is the fastest operating system ever offering much better performance and security than before.

As noted by Extreme Tech, it was first revealed at WWDC last year saying it will arrive at all of its products from Apple TV, watchOS, and iOS. With this, consumers are expecting the Hugh Sierra to come in MacOS today at WWDC 2017.

About the speed, APFS supports far more files than ever, letting users put nine quintillions of them on a single volume. Security-wise, it includes multi-key encryption which makes tough for bad guys to crack even if they have physical access to the users drive. The encryption will also work in a unified way across all of Apple's devices. At the same time, APFS is backwardly compatible with all of your HFS formatted drives.

According to PC Daily, Apple File is arguably more important update on macOS than other devices due to a lot of creative folks lean on their Macs for disk heavy tasks live photo and video editing. As Apple's Vice President Craig Federighi stated on stage, copying files now run nearly instantly on Apple File, compared to the now decades-old HFS file system. It offers not only better throughput but also latency; important if a user is handling a lot of files.

On the other hand, Apple claims that the new advanced file system is optimized for modern storage which includes fast SSDs and flashes, Lightning and USB drives. The company also stated that it will also easily adapt to future types of storage. This new file system will arrive sometime in September at Apple's usual iPhone event with the launch of macOS High Sierra. Stay tuned for more updates.
