Nintendo Hikes Production Of Switch To 18 Million Units To Meet Expected High Demand During Yearend Holiday

May 29, 2017 06:46 AM EDT

Nintendo may have a problem on its hand which could be the envy of other manufacturers. Demand for the console Nintendo Switch is so high that the company may not meet the expected surge in demand during the year-end holiday season. From the previous production target of 16 million units, the Japanese gaming firm is reportedly boosting its target to 18 million units.

However, The Verge reports that boosting production of the Nintendo Switch could have some problems when it comes to sourcing parts of the console. Nintendo could face a shortage of certain parts such as LCD screens. Nintendo actually denies it plans to hike manufacturing of the very popular game console which is always out of stock in stores. The company insists it is targeting only 10 million units for 2017.

Days after Nintendo Switch launched in early March, the unexpected very high demand for the game console resulted in the company doubling its production target to 16 million from 8 million units, Comic Book reports. The addition of 2 million more units is to satisfy customer demand and avoid buyers’ tantrum during the Thanksgiving and Christmas shopping seasons when Nintendo rolls out the “Super Mario Odyssey” during Black Friday.

The website notes that Nintendo has a tendency to be conservative when it comes to forecasting of production and sales for the Nintendo Switch and its consoles. If there are shortages again in November and December, Comic Book hopes retailers such as Best Buy and GameStop would not be torched by frustrated shoppers.

To avert customer tantrum, Nintendo may not ship yet “Super Mario Odyssey” if there are not enough Nintendo Switch consoles where gamers could play it, Engadget reports. The tech website notes long-lasting shortages for a main console is a problem that Nintendo had not grappled for years.
