Sony is now making decisions to shake its smartphone lineup. The company has decided to shut down one line of its smartphone portfolio. Sony's Premium Standard smartphones that include Xperia X and Xperia X Compact which was launched last year will not get successors this year.
As noted by Digital Trends, Sony has confirmed this plan during the 2017 Investor Day starting low sales reports of the mentioned smartphones. The Premium Standard smartphones were said to offer premium specifications at a reasonable price, in which they gathered a huge number of interest in Japan.
In Japan, Sony managed to gain 85 percent of its sales targets; however, internationally they only got a low 31 percent. By these disappointing outcomes, it is only reasonable not to announce successors to the Xperia X and Xperia X Compact.
As several sources stated, last year Sony killed off its C and M series to focus on its newly announced Xperia X series. Since then, Sony has announced a slew of smartphones in the series including flagship-level smartphones like the Sony Xperia XZ Premium and affordable devices like the Xperia XA1.
According to Tech Radar, shutting off the Premium Standard smartphone series isn't the only strategic business-wise but it will also narrow Sony's rather confusing smartphone naming culture. Sources claimed that in the future, Sony will focus on flagship and mid-range devices like the XZ Premium, Xperia XA1, Xperia XZs, and Xperia XA1 Ultra.
This year's company time table, Sony wants to focus on technologies that only Sony can produce and put more concentration on its main markets such as East Asia, Japan, Europe, APAC, and the Middle East. Sony remains to vary in the region of India due to the dominance of budgeted smartphones in the market.
Sony's pure focus is falling squarely on flagship and true mid-range smartphones bringing back its rank in the phone market. The company's premium and mid-range models count the Xperia XZ Premium and Xperia XA1 among their ranks, this phone has clearer definition in their perspective categories.
