Samsung Expansion Plans Include Potential Acquisition Of micro-LED Tech Company PlayNitride

May 04, 2017 05:42 AM EDT

Samsung is reportedly nearing a possible deal involving micro-LED technology manufacturing company PlayNitride. Critics beleive the potential acquisition would aid the Korean electronics giant as far as arming its product line with the new chip technology which thier rivals are believed to be venturing in to.

For those unfamiliar with microscopic LEDs, these are individual display pixels pegged to show higher picture contrast and faster response times. While most are impressed with the OLED display technology most mobile phone companies are focusing on these days, micro-LED technology is looming as the next big thing, Android Authority reported.

If the deal should push through, Samsung could acquire PlayNitride for $150 million according to OLED-Info. With Apple acquiring LuxVue Technology in 2014 and Oculus getting InfiniLED in 2016, Samsung could be joining the mix to take the next step in micro-LED display technology. If so, Samsung could eventually use this technology on its VR applications, possibly replacing its Quantum Dot technology in televisions.

Assuming that a deal between Samsung and PlayNitride is closed, they are not expected to be commercialized until 2020. Apparently, micro-LED display supplies are no different from the current ones plaguing OLED panels though all that could change at some point moving forward. They are cheaper alternatives over OLED, begging to ask how smartphones or tablets may eventually come into the picture.

Right now, that may be fast-forwarding a bit with Samsung and PlayNitride presumably still in negotiations. Aside from TV sets and mobile devices, it could be Samsung’s next big move to keep in step in the wearable sector.

With Apple reportedly coming out with a new Apple Watch, the move could be part of the Korean company’s initiative to perk up their Samsung wearables. There are numerous possibilities which Samsung could undertake. But before anything else, the deal has to be sealed.
