Everyone knows how competition in the smartphone segment is in China. Huawei and Oppo are two of the more popular brands from over there and it seems that here has been a change on who truly rules the Android phone-backed device recently.
Huawei recently snagged the title from Oppo thanks to the latest sales figures. According to Canalys, smartphone sales of Huawei jumped by 21 million units, making it the new king for now. Oppo turned in 20 million, not really bad but a bit surprising.
Oppo recently registered a 55-percent growth in sales but apparently, Huawei did something better than their competitor. Vivo took third place honors, taking 15-percent of the market share with 17 million units shipped. The sales figures returned by Huawei, Oppo, and video account for 50-percent of shipments, the first-time ever. It also means that the Chinese market is consolidating, GSM Arena notes.
It should be noted that Oppo and Vivo (along with OnePlus) are technically under one banner, that of which is BBK Electronics. Hence, this would technically make Oppo perform better if the brands are combined into one. But since BBK seems to be expanding the development by challenging each brand to rise independently, Oppo, Vivo and OnePlus are counted separately.
The fourth spot goes to Apple while Xiaomi rounded up fifth with 9 million devices. If the two, Xiaomi suffered the biggest drop considering it was third a year ago. Apparently, the aggressive push of Huawei and Oppo had something to do with it.
The numbers may not mean much for now but it does show how the marketing efforts have been working for Huawei, Oppo and Vivo. Xiaomi does employ a different kind of marketing strategy, criticized how their smartphones are available. Apple, on the other hand, is suffering from the pricing standpoint, one angle which pushes customers to consider the Chinese brands with similar or better specs but on Android.
