The New York Times, on Sunday, reported that Analytics Company Slice extracted data from the emailed receipts of Lyft riders and sold them to UBER.Unroll.me is used by email users for organizing and deleting subscription emails from their inbox. Unroll.me users grant the service permission to access emails and other personal information. The service was founded in 2011, and acquired by Slice in 2014.
As mentioned in CNN Money, Unroll.me is not the only company to sell the data of its users, but there are many third party applications that users authorize to connected to Gmail or Facebook. These third party apps collect information from the user account and sell them to other companies. So, before allowing access, it is better to go through the privacy policy of each application individually and be sure if they sell the information.
Slice confirmed that it sells data based on ride receipts from Uber and Lyft, without disclosing customer's names, but declined to disclose who buys the information. To stop these authorized companies from collecting and selling information, the user can disconnect these apps from their respective accounts. Unroll.me can be disconnected from Gmail by visiting Google's security page, then go to connected apps & sites and click Manage apps. To delete authorized apps from Facebook, go to Facebook settings, click Apps then click on close"x" icon to disconnect them.
The company's CEO and co-founder, JojoHadaya in a CEO Blog post titled as: "We Can Do Better," declares that he can't highlight the importance of user's privacy. They never release personal data of users. All data is completely anonymous and related to purchases only, as per Komando.
Hadaya, further added that they have a Terms of Service Agreement and a plain-English Privacy Policy that users agree before signing up. He said that most of the user's don't take the time to thoroughly review them and they reserve the right to do just about anything with users data.
Although Hedaya ha openly admitted that they sell the anonymized data of users, one should not trust him. It is better to unauthorized Unroll.me's access to Google account immediately.
