Despite all the advancements in the gaming world, the original "Tomb Raider" game still has a special place in the hearts of gamers. The main lead, Lara Croft is without a doubt one of the most iconic female personas in the gaming industry. Recent developments serve as good news for fans of this classic game as reports reveal that the OpenLara project allows fans to play "Tomb Raider" right on their web browser.
According to reports from Slash Gear, there had been many attempts previously to recreate the classic "Tomb Raider" game and OpenLara is one of them. OpenLara is a browser-based, open-source recreation from the original "Tomb Raider" game engine. Reports indicate that OpenLara also supports modern versions of OpenGL which also includes WebGL. Having that ability not only allows gamers to play the classic "Tomb Raider" game on their web browser, they can actually play "Tomb Raider" using the web browser on their smartphones with touch controls. This is the first time in four years that a first playable level is complete and can also be played using Windows, Mac or Linux PCs.
Other reports from Tech Radar also mentioned OpenLara also lets gamers control Lara Croft and gives them the option to shift between first and third person points of view. Further reports reveal that instead of cloning the original game engine, the developers built a new one. It also has a higher frame rate compared to the original "Tomb Raider" game engine due to the brand new web-friendly codes in place.
"Tomb Raider" modder XProger says that the inspiration for OpenLara came from the OpenTomb project as reports claim. Furthermore, reports also reveal that the development team created a Github page explaining everything about the project. It also discusses the requirements for playing the game. Other developers are also reported to be allowed to make contributions to the build in future as the is an open source. Timeline for the completion of the game is not yet determined.
