EVGA’s Latest Updates: Memory Clock On GTX 1080 FTW2 & SC2 To 11 GHz

Apr 24, 2017 06:49 PM EDT

EVGA declared that their GeForce GTX 1080 FTW2 and SC2 graphics cards will now have faster memory clocks. The initial 10 GHz memory will now be replaced with 11 GHz.

Both the graphics cards- GTX 1080 FW2 and GTX 1080 SC2 have had impressive reviews by gamers. The models were released in February, sporting EVGA's new radical cooling iCX solution and EVGA Precision XOC. This update by EVGA means the graphics card will be hitting new highs. This is so because, with the update, the duo's memory bandwidth becomes 352 Gbps from the initial 320 Gbps.

The American company impressed users further by announcing that these are revised versions of the graphics cards and not higher models. This means that the prices of the FW2 and SC2 remain the same as the originals, just with faster memory.

EVGA also announced on their website that the existing users of FW2 and SC2 will be given a free BIOS update. This update is optional and would upgrade the existing user's graphics card to faster memory speed.

However, EVGA product manager, Jacob Freeman warned that a small number of cards might not be stable at this higher performance mode. It is advisable for the user to stress test the GPU after installing the new BIOS to ensure that it is running smoothly. EVGA suggests using a 3D application or game and watching for any visual abnormality or game crashes. However, this should be looked upon more as a precautionary measure more than anything else.

In case, one's card is found to be unstable after installing the update, EVGA encourages users to contact its customer support for assistance. However, by PC Gamer, it is not clear whether on such happenings; the company would be willing to offer one a functional card in exchange.

This is a very welcome update by EVGA. All users of the GTX 1080 FT2 and SC2, old and new, will be able to enjoy higher memory speed. Moreover, the customer-oriented move of stepping up the models and not stepping up the prices (which also means less confusion while buying) is much appreciated.
