Huawei CEO Blames Memory Shortage For Slower P10 Smartphones

Apr 22, 2017 11:17 AM EDT

New updates reveal that Huawei blames memory shortage for slower P10s. According to recent reports, many Huawei P10 and Huawei P10 Plus users in China have come to realize that their devices were only offering eMMC 5.1 memory speeds.

However, it is been reported that even though the sequential read speeds came in the ballpark of 250MB/s on AndroBench, some lucky consumer whom the developer incorporated the UFS 2.0 or 2.1 chips on their devices were able to achieve up to 750MB/s with some international unit getting 786.67MB/s. Many tech enthusiasts believe that this was a deliberate attempt by Huawei to mislead consumers as the developer did not state the specific type of flash memory used on its Huawei P10 spec sheets.

Meanwhile, it is reported by Engadget that Huawei Business Group, Richard Yu took to Weibo to address where the current issue lies and the position of the company with regards to the issue. He stated that Huawei was left with no choice but to mix the eMMC and UFS memory chips in different Huawei P10 units due to an inevitable critical shortage of flash memory in the supply chain. The tech company was forced by the situation to use what was available at the time.

According to Android Headlines, Yu assured consumers that Huawei is working actively to obtain enough flash memory for future devices. He added that even with the slower benchmarked performance suffered by some Huawei P10 users, the developer is still able to deliver a good real-life performance of the devices through hardware and software optimization.

The CEO went on to blame competitors for the rumors and speculations surrounding the current Huawei P10 issue. he stated that it is all the attempt of competitors to tarnish the good reputation of the tech company. "We would never do such a despicable thing as cutting corners," Yu said.

It is reported that the Huawei P10 has also faced other challenges in the previous months when many Huawei P10 users noticed that some of the devices did not ship with an oleophobic coating on the glass screen to repel oils and fingerprints. The affected Huawei P10 users noted that it appears that the developer was attempting to cut down cost as it was only applied to the screen protector which was stuck on the device.

However, Yu is said to have also clarified issues about the oleophobic coating in the same blog post. He said the issue is related to Gorilla Glass 5's in-cell touch panel as it will interfere with the panel and cause a temporary interference pattern due to static build-up when in use. But Yu stated that the developer now has a new coating technology, and consumers in China can now take their Huawei P10 to Huawei store for the application of an oleophobic coating.
