Recent reports suggest that the newly launched Samsung Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 plus will not with any form of external carrier branding. It is no news that many major carriers always embed their logos on the devices sold through them. However, it is been reported that some major carriers have abandoned the tradition as companies like Sprint and T-Mobile no longer embed their logo on most of the devices sold through them.
Meanwhile, AT&T and Verizon on the other hand, remain advocates of the practice. According to reports, Samsung has decided to dispense with carrier logos since the flagship Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 plus are premium devices and most consumers would not want carrier logos on their devices. It is reported by Android Police, that Samsung was able to come to terms with carriers like AT&T and Verizon with regards to the embedding carrier logos on the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 plus.
The report stated that fans who have already preordered the devices can be at peace with themselves as the flagships will ship completely free from carrier logos. But it is reported that it is still not clear if it will only apply to the exterior of the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 plus or if it will apply to the software too.
Meanwhile, recent reports state that the rule does not extend to software as all the four major carriers have included their unique modifications. Notwithstanding the carrier that consumers purchases from, the carriers have included their own splash screen when the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 plus is turned on and pre-installed carrier applications, according to Android Headlines.
Furthermore, it is reported that Samsung's decision to eliminate carrier logos from the exterior of it premium devices could lead many other manufacturers to tread the same path. This could be used as an opportunity for manufacturers to eliminate carrier logos from their devices altogether. It is believed that it may not be too long before carrier branding permanently disappears from the exterior of premium devices.
The current step, however, could have a detrimental effect on the carrier, in the sense that many developers would likely try to come to terms with regards to software as well, thus taking away all means of identifying devices sold through a particular carrier. On the rear of Samsung's flagship phones is just the name of the device, "Galaxy S8 or Galaxy S8 plus." However, other devices like the LG G6 have carrier logo embedded on it.
