Two weeks after GameStop claimed that the retail chain was closing 150 outlets around the world, the company has recently announced an official notice that a security breach may have led to customer data being stolen and resold to unknown parties. The latest potential security breach strictly relates to the company's online storefront rather than their outlets.
According to PVP Live, customers will be mad to hear that their payment information has been stolen which includes names, addresses, credit card numbers, and expiration dates may have been stolen and sold to unauthorized parties. There are two different sources have indicated that this security breach occurred between September 2016 and February 2017; a long time of space enough to indicate that the breach likely involves a significant amount of customers. The stolen information includes CVV2 credit card information that online retailers aren't supposed to keep a record of. It's possible that the malicious intruders placed the code on the compromised website to obtain this information along with everything else.
GameStop received notifications from a third party that it believed payment card data from cards used on the Gamestop.com website was being offered for a sale on a website which led to a security firm was engaged to investigate the claims. The retailer has and will continue to work non-stop to address this report and take appropriate measures to wash off any issues that may be identified.
According to Digital trends, GameStop as of now didn't release any comment on when it believes the potential security breach took place and didn't state what information may have been stolen. However, the company advises users to monitor their credit card transaction history attentively and to report any unauthorized purchases if they happen to appear.
GameStop has undergone several issues since the year 2017 arrived; first witnessing the hardware resurgence of Nintendo with the massive launch of the Nintendo Switch, then the controversial security breach. Since the possible breach allegedly occurred over a number of months which included the holiday season, the number of people affected by it may be significant.
