Mac Pro Redesigned: Apple Hints At Next Generation's Modular Design & New Display

Contrary to popular belief, the Mac Pro line isn't dead. It will, however, go through a major overhaul and will be completely redesigned to be more "upgradable." That said, Apple hints that the next Mac Pro model will have a modular design and will soon sport a new display.

According to Mashable, Apple gathered a number of tech media personalities for a roundtable discussion concerning Apple's future plans, something that is out of character for the tech giant. During the meeting held in Cupertino, Phil Schiller, Apple's senior vice president for worldwide marketing revealed that Apple is essentially rebooting the Mac Pro.

Incidentally, the next generation Mac Pro will not be released this year according to Schiller. Apple, however, is in the process of designing a modular system for the new Mac Pro. On the other hand, Schiller reveals that Apple will be doing the Pro display, essentially confirming that the display for the next Mac Pro line will not be built by LG.

Tech Crunch reports that the current Mac Pro, which was introduced back in 2013, was designed to fit a number of needs. While the Mac Pro has delivered on its promise to provide the most powerful system at the time it was built, the triangular design of its thermal core just wasn't equipped to support the powerful GPU configuration leading to, in some cases, overheating.

In other words, they have designed themselves into a corner that the Mac Pro ended up being inflexible and thermally challenged. Thus, Apple sees that having a modular design for the next generation Mac Pro would be a key in solving its past mistakes.

During the meeting, the Apple executives also touched on the iMac. According to Craig Federighi, Apple Senior Vice President for software engineering, some Mac Pro users are turning to the iMac when they realize that the latter can be utilized in a manner that the Mac Pro can't provide for them. That said, Apple will start introducing the next generation iMac this year.

Schiller wants to reassure the Mac Pro consumers that despite the delays in updates and upgrades, Mac Pro and its development remain important to Apple. Schiller apologized for what happened with the Mac Pro and promised that their team is going to put all stops to make sure that "something great" replaces the Mac Pro.
