Marvel To Release ‘Spider-Man’ Game in PlayStation 4 As Exclusive Title In 2017

Apr 04, 2017 03:52 AM EDT

A number of Marvel superhero games are arriving in PlayStation consoles. Some would be exclusives, while others would be across different gaming platforms. For instance, sometime in 2017, “Spider-Man” would exclusively release in PlayStation 4, Ryan Penagos, vice president and executive editor of Marvel Digital Media, said.

More Marvel Games

Besides “Spider-Man,” another Marvel game, “Marvel Vs. Capcom: Infinite” would release on Xbox One, PS4, and PC, Penagos said in a live stream captured by GamingSince95, a Reddit user. GameSpot notes that while a “Spider-Man” title from Insomniac was announced during E3 2016, Marvel, Sony or Insomniac, until now, have not announced an official release date.

In “Spider-Man,” the exclusive PS4 game, players are cast as the superhero in a completely original story. The setting is in New York where Peter Parker is already an experienced hero and have mastered fighting crimes. In the game’s description, it says the game character is a Spider-Man unlike any that gamers had played before because besides the web-slinger hero “traversing with parkour and utilizing the environment,” there would also be new combat and blockbuster set pieces.

Not Tied To Upcoming Movie

Although Penagos did not provide a specific release date for the new game “Spider-Man,” Polygon believes it would not be timed with the release of the upcoming film by Marvel, “Spider-Man: Homecoming.” When the Spider-Man IP was still handled by Activision, games, and movie releases were timed simultaneously. However, Jay Ong, Marvel vice president of games, explained that tie-ins no longer work.

When studios want to create well-developed games, rushing the development of a game like “Spider-Man” to match the premiere of a movie would be detrimental to the success and overall quality of the game. The game is being developed by Ratchet and Clank, and Sunset Overdrive studio, Digital Trends reports.
