HTC will celebrate their one year anniversary of the release of the HTC Vive Virtual Reality (VR) headset. The system has been surprisingly hit for the aging company which was always been devoted a surprising amount of resources towards gaining an early foothold on the incredibly young industry.
According to Upload VR, HTC has continued to put a major emphasis on building out initiatives and platform services. The company's Viveport VR game subscription service will be launched this coming Wednesday. This service will give PC-powered headset users the chance to download 5 compatible titles for only $6.99 per month. Users are now allowed to download new titles at the beginning of each month or continue playing queue games that they are already enjoying.
HTC Vive users will be receiving a one month free trial for the service that will launch with a limited number of top titles. Most HTC Vive users download games from Valve's Steam store; the creator of the SteamVR operating system which the Vive uses. More 1600 titles for the HTC Vive available on the Valve's Steam store right now.
The HTC Company introduced the Viveport app store in August as a home for much of the non-gaming content launching for VR. DLC can be played across major PC-powered platforms including Oculus Rift and HTC Vive. By this, building its own storefront means building a new revenue source outside of hardware in the VR market.
According to Tech Radar, this week's Wednesday is HTC's first birthday! HTC will give a temporary $100 discount off the Vive system buyers. VR gained countless reputations for being a rather expensive hobby but other competitors like the Facebook-owned Oculus Rift have been making its major strides and increased its affordability up to $200 discount on the system. HTC will also be giving away a copy one of their newest Vive Studios titles, Arcade Saga, to all Vive owners.
