Moto G5 Plus Is The Best Budget Smartphone, For Now

Mar 29, 2017 09:12 AM EDT

Moto has come out with two new smartphones for 2017 with the introduction of the Moto G5 and its better variant, the G5 Plus. Moto, now owned by Lenovo, has consistently managed to provide quality and feature smartphones for an arguably lesser price for years now. This year too doesn't see any major changes for the two new phones. Both the G5 and G5 Plus are exclusive to Prime members on Amazon USA.

Moto's G series smartphones turn out to be an effective device for people not looking to spend huge chunks of cash for a smartphone. A review from The Verge suggests that there's hardly any other phone that can offer the same comfort and user experience. This is likely due to negligible bloatware from Moto's side of things for its operating system. Moto G5 Plus is available at a discounted price of $239.99 for the 64GB/4GB variant while the 32GB/2GB variant is offered at an even cheaper price of just $184.99.

The display on the new Moto G5 Plus is excellent for its asking price, which comes at a resolution of 1080p that offers some great viewing angles. However, the smartphones have seemed to be downgraded in its camera department even with a 12MP camera on the rear. The final image output isn't very satisfactory but that said, it's fairly sane to not compare the results to something like an S7 Edge or even an iPhone for that matter.

Meanwhile. Ars Technica points out the same downgrade and also questioned Lenovo's update policy ever since they acquired Moto from Google. This is likely due to the fact that the previous generation Moto G phones haven't received a major update for a long time now. A new change on the smartphone's fingerprint scanner is that it locks the device when users put their finger on the fingerprint sensor when the device is awake.

If anything that needs a likely change, it has to be on the software update sector with the recent smartphones hardly receiving any updates for that matter. Overall, the G5 Plus is, at least on paper, a good budget smartphone for now until there are any new announcements from their competitors in the coming days.
