AMD Update: Ryzen 5 Poses A Challenge on Intel's Kaby Lake Core on PC

Mar 17, 2017 05:37 AM EDT

American multinational semiconductor company Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD)'s recent release of the new Ryzen 5 could be a huge threat now in the mainstream market of the high-end processor. These processors are said to be a huge competition to Intel's Kaby Lake processors.

AMD's Ryzen is the new line of mainstream processors of the company, joining the roster of the high-end Ryzen 7 chips and the budget-friendly Ryzen 3 chips, according to the article by Adrian Kingsley-Hughes for ZDNet. The two latter processors mentioned are planned to be released for the second half of the year.

The AMD Ryzen 5 ic considered as a bigger package compare to Ryzen 7 because it is twice as big as the high-end market processor market. In addition, the re-entry of the processor into the mainstream market shows a real threat to Intel's dominance in the PC Industry, especially their Kaby Lake Core i5-7600K, Ars Technica has reported.

AMD reveals that four Ryzen 5 chips will be on sale. These chips range from $249 6-core/12-thread Ryzen 5 1600X to the $169 4-core/8-thread Ryzen 5 1400.

The AMD Ryzen 5 1600X has 6 cores and 12 threads, 3.6/4.0 GHz, with the price of $249. The Ryzen 5 1600 has 6 cores and 12 thread, 3.2/3.6 GHz, Wraith Spire cooler, with the price of $219.

On the other hand, the AMD Ryzen 5 1500 has 4 cores and 8 thread, 3.5/3.7 GHz, Wraith Spire cooler, and a price of $189. The Ryzen 5 1400 has the same cores and threads with the previously mentioned processor, 3.2/3.4 GHz, Wraith Stealth cooler, and a price of $169.

All of these AMD Ryzn chips are supplied with an unlocked multiplier. They are allowed to be overclocked although if the customer fry one doing this, the company would not guarantee warranty on the chip.

With this feature, it is said to be a huge challenge to Intel's quad-core Kaby Lake i5-7600K. PC World has reported that the AMD Ryzen 5 1600X is up to 69 percent faster than the Intel's processor. Both chips are at the same price at $249.

The AMD Ryzen 5 chips and systems will be available to the public on April 11. Keep updated here for more information.
