The Piggies are back, and Angry Birds fans might be raring to see them all splatter with a vengeance.
Finnish game developer Rovio Entertainment Ltd. released Angry Birds 2 on July 30th, a full six years after the first Angry Birds game was released in 2009. Since the first release of the game, the series has now grown to 12 titles, 3 spin-offs, a console compilation for the Xbox, and one crossover. The brand even has three theme parks named after it, and merchandise such as plush toys, board games, telepods, and even softdrinks, were built around the Angry Birds. Comics and a series of books, including story books, activity books, a documentary, National Geographic, as well as cook books, were built around the Angry Birds. It also has animated series built around it, as well as an upcoming full-length movie. It’s no longer a game, it’s an empire.

The Angry Birds even got so popular, that knockoffs and unauthorized use of its brand and graphics has turned up around the globe. The impact on the company’s profits is unknown, though at its peak, Rovio Entertainment raked in revenues of €156 million in 2013, with a net income of €26.9 million. By the end of 2014, however, the company’s revenues dipped a full 73%, and they reported their earnings at only €10 million.
With the release of Angry Birds 2, Rovio Mobile will hopefully recover from its losses.
