It’s not one of the thinnest phones around, but it certainly is Samsung’s thinnest, so far.
The Samsung Galaxy A8, which is 5.9 mm thick, is thinner than a Huawei Ascend P6 at 6.18mm, but it’s still thicker than a Vivo X3, which has a thickness of 5.57mm. But no matter, Samsung fans in Korea are about to enjoy the slim beauty with the mid-range hardware.
The Samsung Galaxy A8 has already been rolled out in China on July 15th, and is debuting on July 24th in its home country, South Korea.
While the smartphone model’s selling point is its thinness, the other dimensions may eclipse the selling point it’s angling for, anyway. It stands at 5.7” diagonally, has a length of 6.22” and a width of 3.02”. Hardly a petite thing, but, well, it still maintains its claim to fame of the thinnest Samsung phone, anyway.
Specs-wise, pundits have nothing extraordinary to say, as Samsung seems to have angled it as an everyman’s product: It’s an octa-core smartphone powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 (MSM8939), which clocks in at 1.5 GHz and 1.0 GHz for both quad-core A53 Cortex chips. It is boosted by 2GB of RAM, an Adreno 405 GPU, and its internal storage comes in 16GB and 32GB variants. Nothing to write home about, really, but someone who chooses this phone over the flagship devices will be holding a very thin, decent, 151 g Samsung.
For selfie and digital photo buffs, its 16 MP main camera produces a maximum output of 5312 x 2988 pixels, while the selfie cam comes in at 5 MP. With autofocus, an LED flash for the main cam, face detection, touch focus, panorama, HDR, as well as geo-tagging, this phone will definitely take decent pictures. With a price rumored to be at $515 for the 16GB variant and $564 for the 32GB variant, if a prospective buyer is going for the Samsung Galaxy A8 over the Samsung Galaxy S6 or S6 Edge, they’re paying for its thinness.
To compare, here are the Top 5 thinnest smartphones on the market:
1. Vivo X5 Max at 4.75mm thickness
2. OPPO R5 at 4.85mm thickness
3. Gionee Elife S5.1 at 5.15mm thickness
4. Gionee Elife S5.5 at 5.5mm thickness
5. Vivo X3 at 5.57mm thickness
For reference, the company’s flagship devices come in at 6.8 mm in thickness for the Samsung Galaxy S6, while the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge is 7 mm thick.
