Review: Secret App Addiction

Apr 15, 2014 11:32 AM EDT

There is a “Secret” App Addiction going on these days... “We built Secret for people to be themselves and share anything they’re thinking and feeling with their friends without judgment, we did this by eliminating profile photos and names and by putting the emphasis entirely on the words and images being shared,” shared the Secret team. Secret is an Android app available at Google Play. Currently, the Secret app is available in the U.S. only.

Secret is a space to openly share what users are thinking and feeling with friends. Speak freely, share anything. Making the words stand out by adding a photo or color backdrop is possible. The user can swipe to adjust until it feels right. Every post is unique. The more people love the users posts, the further they spread.

The users secrets are delivered anonymously to the people in your Contacts who are on Secret. They can view, love and comment on the post. When friends love a secret, it will be shared to their friends. If they love the post, it can reach even further. When the users secret travels beyond two degrees, it will be marked with your general location, like “California”. People beyond two degrees will be able to love your post or comments, but won’t be able to add comments to the conversation.

Secret’s new app is stored on Google’s Apps Engine. Data is stored on Google servers — essentially the same servers as Gmail. This means the secrets are as safe as the users email (edit: to be crystal clear, this refers to the physical safety of data on disk, which are hosted in the same data centers as Gmail.) The team also describes Secret's deliver system as secure, fast and it should learn. When the user initiates a post, the post is delivered to the author.

Secret will be coming soon to more cities within the U.S. The Secret App is currently not available for Android. The options to download are via iOS or to install directly by visiting the Secret.ly website. The user is in control when using Secret. It is up to the user to decide which secrets spread within Secret. If they see something inappropriate, there is an option to swipe left or tap the "..." icon to Hide or Report the post. There is a community guide for users.
