AT&T’s gigabit fiber optic broadband network in Austin must be doing well because the carrier has announced that it’s doubling down on its commitment to the city. As part of a new multi-million dollar investment in Austin, AT&T will be opening a “center for technology innovation and collaboration.”
It isn’t entirely clear yet what the center’s purpose will be, but the company says that areas of focus will include education, data analytics, next-generation video and various mobile solutions.
“The new AT&T center is being designed to help connect Austin in new and rewarding ways based on community member input,” said Dahna Hull, vice president and general manager, Austin, AT&T Services, Inc. “When you put great minds together, the potential to enhance our way of life is endless. We can’t wait to hear from and collaborate with Austinites as we move this program forward.”
AT&T says it will work with local residents and community leaders to design and build the new center and hopes that new opportunities to improve Austin will become evident throughout the course of the collaboration.
“Opening a center for innovation in the heart of the city will create even greater opportunities for Austin’s entrepreneurs, technology developers, and students,” said Austin Mayor Lee Leffingwell. “AT&T will have an opportunity to work closely with the many talents in our city, and the community stands to benefit from the exciting collaboration that will take place in this facility. We are fortunate to have companies like AT&T that appreciate our culture and invest in our future.”
In addition to the center for innovation, AT&T says it also plans to award a series of technology endowments and continue working with the University of Texas. Endowment recipients will include the Austin Technology Council, Austin Technology Institute, Capital Factory, Entrepreneurs Foundation and the Tech Ranch.
