Mobile And Millennials

Millennials are increasingly looking towards mobile in the coming months and using Android. Android OS had increased to 56% in share from 52% a year prior. Ad impressions in categories such as travel, books and researching for price comparisons have become favored among millennials. Competitor Apple is still the largest device maker for Millennial’s with Samsung following. Mobile games are also a leading category for Millennials.

Social media, productivity, tools and gaming were sought out categories from Millennials eager to use their tablets and smartphones within these areas. Sports apps, specifically for soccer, such as the upcoming World Cup in Brazil in 2014 is also very popular amongst this group. Smartphones have been popular for millennial retail users.

A recent study, commissioned by Zipcar, the car-sharing company, and provided exclusively to Forbes, showed that nearly 40 percent of millennials would rather lose their automobile instead of their smartphone. They also favored mobile over  losing access to a desktop or laptop computer, or a TV set.

The study also shows only 16 percent of people age 35 and up who think losing their phones would be more difficult to take than losing access to those other things. Also, more than 40 percent of people 35 and up believe losing their cars would be the hardest aspect of their lives to give up.

The current Millennial population is estimated to be 80 million or about a quarter of the U.S. population. It is projected that by 2030, millennials will outnumber the baby boomer generation. Millennials were the product of growing up in a 250+-channel home cable TV world. There are over 90% of millennials who use and own a mobile phone. The majority use smartphones and actively use the internet through the devices.
