We reported last week on some Nexus 5 leaks and rumors suggesting Google’s venerable Android smartphone, currently available only in black and white, would be adding a number of additional colors to its lineup. The news of new Nexus 5 color options has already been widely reported, though some have suggested that the official-looking screenshots showing various Nexus 5 color variants in the Google Play store are little more than an elaborate Photoshop job.
Nonetheless, new pictures leaked on Monday purportedly show a red Nexus 5 in retail packaging. To be clear, the photos look pretty legit, not that rumors of new Nexus 5 colors sounded especially far-fetched in the first place. Apple this year added a number of colors to its iPhone lineup and some additional color options would help keep the Nexus 5 fresh for a while longer.
Google subsidiary Motorola already offers one of the most customizable smartphones on the market with the Moto X and Motomaker, so a few new color options for the Nexus 5, arguably the flagship of Android devices, would make a lot of sense.
Hopefully, some form of official confirmation from Google or LG on the new Nexus 5 color variants will be forthcoming, but so far both companies have remained mum on the subject. It’s worth noting that the new pictures show only a red Nexus 5, so it’s possible that Google is simply releasing a single new color variant rather than the six or more previously speculated.
