Sprint Unveils Framily Plan

Jan 09, 2014 09:59 AM EST

It’s been a busy year for Sprint, with steady subscriber growth and the rollout of 4G LTE coverage to a number of additional markets. On Tuesday the company announced a new kind of shared billing model called the Framily Plan that allows customers as many as 10 lines that are each billed individually. Each line on the Framily plan includes unlimited talk, text messaging and 1GB of data.

“The Sprint Framily Plan redefines the way we think of family plans and gives our customers the power to decide who will be a part of their group and gain greater savings as more members are added,” said Dan Hesse, Sprint CEO in a press statement. “Sprint continues to be a leader in offering customers choice, flexibility and value. The Sprint Framily Plan makes Sprint the best choice for families and friends.”

Sprint’s Framily plan is nothing if not innovative and for customers with a handful of friends willing to go in on a shared plan, the savings are nothing to scoff at. A line on the Framily plan costs $55 and for each additional subscriber, Sprint will lower the monthly payment by $5 per line up to a $30 discount. This means that if you have six or more friends on the plan, you’ll all be paying $25 each per month. As much as we love T-Mobile CEO John Legere, Un-Carrier has nothing on Sprint’s new offering and neither does AT&T Next for that matter.

Sprint says the inspiration for the Framily Plan arose from the U.S. Census and the observation that traditional family plans may be an outdated model based on the makeup of many American households.

“According to the 2010 U.S. Census, 60 percent of total U.S. households are made up of fewer than three people and are growing more quickly than larger households. The Sprint Framily plan gives these 60 percent of households the opportunity to create a family plan with virtually any group who wants to come together to purchase wireless service,” the company said.
