Zedge Update Delivers New UI, Recommendations

For a few years now, Zedge has consistently been one of the most downloaded apps on the Android platform and for good reason. On Thursday, the company gave users a few more reasons to stay loyal with a revamped user interface and the addition of a recommendation engine.

Above all else, Zedge has always been about the content and this week’s update makes it easier than ever to find it.

“The Zedge app is already installed on approximately 20% of Android phones across the US, and we expect the visually appealing, user-friendly experience of our latest version will not only attract more loyal Zedgers; it will also increase the usage across our existing install base,” said Tom Arnoy, Zedge CEO and co-founder in a press statement. “The update also makes it easier for us to quickly introduce new features and capabilities into the service.”

Not that we had any significant gripes with Zedge before, but the new interface does essentially everything the company says it’s intended for without compromising any features that users are already comfortable with. That’s saying a lot given the disastrous redesigns of flagship apps like Twitter and Facebook.

In addition to the ringtones and wallpapers that Zedge is arguably most notable for, the company also seems to be positioning itself to leverage the mobile gaming market.

“Personalization and gaming are fundamental parts of the smartphone experience, and Zedge has earned its 75MM+ Android downloads by empowering users with custom wallpapers, unique ringtones, great notification sounds and outstanding games,” Arnoy said.

It will be interesting to see if Zedge will be able to leverage its 75 million-strong user base to become a serious player in the mobile gaming world, but as long as the company continues making it easy to find custom ringtones and wallpaper, we don’t have any problem with them trying.
