Chromebase Desktop Computer Will Debut At CES 2014

LG has announced it will be unveiling a new Chrome-based all-in-one desktop computer called the Chromebase at CES 2014. Boasting a “minimalistic package,” the Chromebook looks not unlike an Apple iMac, with a white color scheme and 21.5-inch widescreen display.

While LG hasn’t indicated a release date yet, the new all-in-one should satisfy a lot of Chrome fans when it eventually hits stores. A fourth-generation Intel Celeron CPU powers the computer, though it’s not clear which one or how powerful it will be.  It will have a 2GB RAM allotment and 16-GB solid-state hard drive.

"Simple to operate for all types of users, the LG Chromebase computer represents the successful combination of simplicity, power and great design," said Hyoung-sei Park, head of the IT business division at LG electronics in a press release. "LG Chromebase is the wave of the future for desktops, which we hope to be widely adopted not only at home, but especially in schools, hotels, call centers and other business settings."

Chrome isn’t nearly as popular an operating system as Windows 8 or OS X and the all-in-one design probably won’t make it any easier of a sell, but LG seems to be hedging its bets a little bit by including an HDMI input, allowing users to essentially turn the Chromebase into a 21.5-inch a monitor for a different computer.

"LG's Chromebase is an exciting new form factor that expands the options available to customers who want a fast, simple and secure computing experience for the home, school or office," said Caesar Sengupta, vice president of product management, Google. “LG makes great devices that customers love, and we're glad to welcome them to the Chrome family."

LG hasn’t said what the Chromebase will cost yet, but it will need to be on the lower end of the price range if the company wants to appeal to new consumers who aren’t converts to the operating system already.
