Samsung Launches Game Controller, Mobile Console App

Samsung today revealed the second iteration of its GamePad accessory for the Galaxy line of Android devices. It’s unclear yet if the accessory works with any non-Samsung smartphones, but the clasp will hold screens up to 6.3 inches.

If the previous GamePad looked a little like a lame Xbox 360 controller, the new version looks like a sleek throwback to the Sega Genesis, in a good way. It has two analog sticks, a D-pad, two triggers and four buttons. Samsung says the controller’s frame is made of steel, unlike the plastic Galaxy smartphones it’s designed to pair with.   

“The Smartphone GamePad instantly transforms the user’s Galaxy smartphone or tablet into a portable gaming console or even a home console,” Samsung wrote in a press release. “Through its premium, easy-to-carry design and durable steel frame, GamePad is attachable to mobile devices ranging from 4-inches to 6.3-inches, allowing users to play games wherever they are.”

GamePad pairs via Bluetooth 3.0 and works with any Galaxy device running Android 4.1+, though Samsung says it’s optimized for Android 4.3 Jelly Bean.

In tandem with the second-gen GamePad, Samsung is rolling out a Mobile Console app, which serves as a dedicated app store for games optimized for the new accessory. By bypassing the Google Play Store, users can avoid purchasing titles that aren’t compatible with the GamePad. 

At launch, 35 dedicated GamePad titles will be available in the Mobile Console store, including Modern Combat 4, Need for Speed Most Wanted and Virtua Tennis.

“With just a tap of the “PLAY” button, users can easily access the Mobile Console app, Samsung’s new integrated game launching app that opens in conjunction with GamePad to allow users to conveniently browse and purchase game pad supported games. Users can save money by enjoying reasonably priced console-quality games without the expense of additional gaming systems, as Mobile Console features games across a variety of categories.”

The GamePad is currently available in Europe, but Samsung says the device will begin shipping out to additional regions in the next few weeks.
