Razer Comms Android Chat App Released

Dec 17, 2013 10:34 AM EST

If you’ve ever had a friend who was really into Call of Duty or World of Warcraft, chances are you’ve watched them yelling terrible things into a headset or PC mic. Last week, gaming company Razer announced that it would be bringing that capability to the mobile gaming world via a new Android app called Razer Comms.

Have you ever reached for your Ventrilo trigger button while playing Candy Crush Saga in the car? The new Android Comms app can’t help you there, but it does allow you to call or send messages to other Comms users. Razer Comms is a cross-platform VOIP solution, so Android users can chat with friends using the PC client.

“Staying connected in today’s world has become increasingly important and gamers are no exception to that,” said Min-Liang Tan, Razer co-founder, CEO and creative director in a press release. “Razer Comms solves that by being the world’s first VoIP solution to allow gamers to make VoIP calls or instant message with their friends on the road from in-game and vice versa.”

Razer has a lot of credibility in the gaming world and like some of its previous offerings, the Comms chat app isn’t necessarily intended for casual gamers. The Razer Edge Pro is the company’s NVIDIA-powered Windows 8 tablet and arguably one of the most opulent mobile gaming experiences money can buy. The slate has an Intel Core i7 processor, 8GB of RAM and $1,250 price tag. While the new Razer Comms Android app is free, we still don’t imagine it’s targeted to folks who like to get a round or two of Angry Birds in on the subway.

In addition to the roll out of the Android app, Razer said it would be updating its Comms PC client with a new “Stay in the Game” feature that allows users to reply to texts and reject phone calls directly from their computer.

Razer Comms is Android-only at the moment, but the company says an iOS version is “tentatively” scheduled to launch in Q1 2014.
