HTC One Mini Sales Ban Lifted

A British court today delivered HTC an early Christmas present: the injunction prohibiting the sale of the HTC One mini in the United Kingdom has been stayed pending a new hearing scheduled for December 12. For the time being, retailers can continue to sell the HTC One minis they already have in stock, though HTC itself can’t ship out any further units until the final hearing.

"HTC is pleased that an urgent hearing with the Court of Appeal has been scheduled for Dec. 12. Until the Court of Appeal hearing on Dec. 12, the court's injunction against HTC is stayed," the Taoyuan-based company said in an e-mailed statement to Focus Taiwan, a Taiwanese news channel. "Until the hearing on Dec. 12, our U.K. customers will be able to sell all HTC devices which are already in their inventories."

HTC has been unable to sell the device since December 6 when Nokia won an injunction, arguing the HTC One mini infringed on its patents. While today’s ruling is a win for HTC, the victory may be short-lived as the court agrees that the flagship HTC One does indeed violate a Nokia patent pertaining to microchips.

Still, the court warned Finland-based Nokia not to use its massive library of patents to troll other companies. AndroidandMe opined that Nokia’s patent lawsuits to date seem “well thought it,” so it will be interesting to say what happens December 12 when the court makes its final decision regarding the injunction.

The HTC One mini is a scaled down version of the HTC One, which competes with flagship devices like the iPhone 5 and Samsung Galaxy S4. The HTC One mini is in many ways analogous to Samsung’s Galaxy S4 Mini. While Apple this year also released a slightly cheaper variant of the iPhone, its dimensions remained the same.
