The HTC One Google Play Edition has recently begun receiving OTA Android 4.4 KitKat updates, but for those facing region restrictions, a manual installation may prove more prudent.
This guide will walk you though the installation process for the official Android 4.4 KitKat build on the HTC One Google Play Edition. As always, DroidReport assumes no liability for the firmware installation. Proceed with caution.
Before Getting Started
Do not use this guide for any device other than the HTC One Google Play Edition. Flashing this ROM onto any other device will most probably result in a bricked phone.
You must have your HTC One Google Play Edition rooted, with a recovery utility like ClockworkMod installed. As always, you want to backup your device and charge it to at least 80 percent.
Finally, enable USB Debugging mode by navigating to Settings -> Developer Options.
Updating HTC One Google Play Edition to Official Android 4.4 KitKat ROM
1) Download the official Android 4.4 KitKat ROM, which can be found here.
2) Using your USB cable, connect your HTC One Google Play Edition to your computer.
3) Copy the official Android 4.4 KitKat custom ROM to the root folder of your handset’s SD card. Do not extract.
4) Restart your phone into Recovery mode by pressing the Volume Down and Power buttons simultaneously. Use the Volume keys to navigate to Recovery and confirm with the power button.
5) Navigate to “Apply from phone storage.” Confirm with the Power button.
6) Select 0/, followed by Download. Next, select the ROM file downloaded earlier.
7) Allow the update to install. This will take a few minutes. Do not interrupt the process.
8) After the installation is complete, select “Reboot system now” to restart your phone. This may take some time.
9) After restarting, your HTC One Google Play Edition will be running the official Android 4.4 KitKat build. Kudos.
