Installing Android 4.4 AOSP RevolutionROM On Xperia Z1

Nov 15, 2013 04:48 PM EST

The XDA Developers team has released yet another custom ROM based on Android 4.4 KitKat, this time for the Sony Xperia Z1. The new RevolutionROM is an AOSP build compiled by XDA contributor krabappel2548.

This guide will walk you though the installation process. As always, DroidReport assumes no liability for the firmware installation. Proceed with caution.

Before Getting Started

Do not use this guide for any device other than the Xperia Z1. Flashing this ROM onto any other device will most probably result in a bricked phone.

You must have your Xperia Z1 rooted, with a recovery utility like ClockworkMod installed. As always, you want to backup your device and charge it to at least 80 percent.

Finally, enable USB Debugging mode by navigating to Settings -> Developer Options.

Updating Xperia Z1 to Android KitKat 4.4 via AOSP RevolutionROM

1) Download the Android 4.4 KitKat AOSP RevolutionROM boot.img and system.img files, which can be found here and here.

2) Download Fastboot (with adb files), available here.

3) Extract the Fastboot and adb files, then copy the boot.img and system.img files into the same directory.

4) Boot your phone into Fastboot mode by shutting it off, then holding the Volume Up key and connecting the USB cable. The notification light should turn blue.

5) Navigate to the folder where you extracted the files downloaded earlier and open up a command prompt. Type the following command to install the system.img file: “fastboot flash system system.img.”

6) Install the boot.img file by typing in “fastboot flash boot boot.img.”

7) Allow the installation to complete. This may take a few minutes.

8) Once the installation completes, disconnect your phone. This will cause it to automatically restart.

9) After restarting, your Xperia Z1 will officially be running Android 4.4 KitKat AOSP RevolutionROM. Kudos.
