Samsung Pay Latest Update Brings UPI Support in India, Says Report

Last month, Samsung had introduced its contactless payment solution in India called Samsung Pay. Now, the Samsung has started rolling out the latest update, which will bring support for India's Unified Payments Interface (UPI) payment service to Samsung Pay.

The UPI support comes with an 84MB update to Samsung Pay, which shows up as a notification when you open the app and after installation. The respective UPI account can be added simply by instructions as noted by Sammobile.

UPI is a nationwide payment service which allows users to easily transfer and receive funds by registering their mobile phone number. The UPI service went live in August last year and is interoperable between banks, which meaning that the sender and recipient can have an account in any bank and still fund exchange can take place.

The Unique Selling Point of UPI is its simplicity. One just needs their Aadhaar card and mobile number linked with their bank account. Unlike other online money transfer modes, UPI does away with the need of having detail such as IFSC code, name, and branch, bank account number as reported by BGR.

With this addition in place, owner of supported Samsung smartphones will now be able to make payments from their bank accounts using UPI service. Interestingly, Samsung Pay supports both NFC and Magnetic Secure Transmission (MST) and also allows a user to send a magnetic signal from smartphone to the payment terminal's card reader, as per NDTV.

Samsung Pay service is presently available on the latest Samsung Galaxy S8, Galaxy S8+, Galaxy S7 edge, Galaxy S7, Galaxy Note 5, Galaxy S6 edge+, Galaxy A5 (2016), Galaxy A7 (2016), Galaxy A5 (2017) and Galaxy A7 (2017). The Samsung is likely to soon make the service available on the Samsung Gear S3 Smartwatch also, which will allow users to pay using their wearable device.
