Besides the speculated curved infinity display and 256GB storage of the Samsung Galaxy Note 8, various reports identify a codename used by the South Korean tech giant for the upcoming phablet flagship. It is codename “Baikal,” from Lake Baikal, the deepest lake in the world found in southern Siberia. The codename was posted on Weibo, China’s most popular microblogging site, and shared on Instagram and Twitter.

Codename “Baikal”

Droid-Life writes that Lake Baikal, the source of the codename “Baikal” for the upcoming Galaxy Note 8, has a depth of 5,314 feet which is why it is considered the deepest lake in the world. It is also one of the clearest bodies of freshwater in the world. The massive and beautiful body of water houses 20 percent of the total unfrozen freshwater reserve in the world.

Beyond those basic information, it is unknown why Samsung used codename “Baikal” for the Galaxy Note 8 which is expected to have a 4K screen to improve VR experience and have Bixby, the Samsung virtual assistant powered by AI, according to Sam Mobile. It is speculated to be powered by a Snapdragon 835 chipset, sport 6GB of RAM, and have a dual-lens camera, plus a large battery, an IP68 certificate, iris scanner and a revamped S-Pen with speakers, according to The Christian Post.

The screen of the Galaxy Note 8, codename “Baikal,” would be 6.2-inch dual-edged curved displays similar to that on the Galaxy S7 Edge. The phablet considered the most important gadget of Samsung after the Galaxy Note 7, would have a bezel-less design that leaves no space to place a Samsung logo on the phone’s front. Since the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 almost destroyed the brand of Samsung, the South Korean tech giant is ensuring that the Galaxy Note 8 would have great specs.

Delayed Launch

However, rather than launch at the MWC 2017, Samsung would debut the codename “Baikal” Galaxy Note 8 on March 29. The phablet flagship would go on sale after the third week of April, according to Phone Arena.
