LG Rolls Out A Flip Phone With Android Inside

There’s another reason to envy South Korea. If the fact that it is Samsung’s capital isn’t reason enough, LG is releasing an Android flip phone, but it will be available only to South Korea.

In the age of touch screens and the QWERTY phone’s diminishing demand, it is truly odd to still see LG roll out a flip phone. What’s more is that there’s also the question of who could possibly want those.

According to Daniel Bean of Yahoo! Tech, South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham might want one of those, as the Senator went public with smashing his flip phone in various ways (setting it on fire, tossing it into a blender) in reaction to fellow presidential candidate and mogul of all things Donald Trump gave out his private phone number. If Senator Graham chose to upgrade to an Android, the LG Gentle might be the perfect option.

The LG Gentle runs Lollipop 5.1 straight out of the box. It’s powered by a 1.1 GHz quad-core processor and 1GB RAM. The internal storage is at 4GB, and it’s expandable via microSD cards. The cameras don’t have much to boast about, as the front is just a VGA camera, while the main camera can only render up to 3.15MP. Hardly cutting-edge, but this is a flip phone, after all, a throwback to the late 90’s.

In keeping with the traditional flip phone form factor, LG kept the screen at a relatively tiny 3.2 inches. A far cry from the 5.5 to 6.5 inchers that are all the rage nowadays, but this is just the flip phone, Android-ified.

There are no other bells and whistles to set it apart from the crowd, except for the fact that it’s a flip Android phone, and it costs an equivalent of $171.

Since this is going to be targeted for a demographic that isn’t into the iPhone 6 or the Samsung Galaxy S6, everything about the LG Gentle just might work.

The only problem is that, for the moment, only South Koreans will be able to enjoy the phone.

Unless someone starts retailing them on eBay, of course.
