Samsung Unveils Galaxy S5

By Staff Reporter | Feb 24, 2014 06:28 PM EST

In news that should come as little surprise to anyone who’s been following the Galaxy S5, Samsung on Monday rolled out its new flagship smartphone at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. As expected, the Galaxy S5 packs some new features like a fingerprint scanner, as well as a significantly upgraded camera that boasts 16 megapixels.

Unfortunately, rumors of a radically redesigned Galaxy S5 with metal construction turned out to be false, as Samsung’s new smartphone is yet again made from plastic and fairly indistinguishable from its predecessor.

“With the Galaxy S5, Samsung is going back to basics to focus on delivering the capabilities that matter most to our consumers,” said JK Shin, president and head of IT & mobile communications division at Samsung in a press statement. “Consumers are looking for mobile tools that inspire and support them as they improve their everyday lives. The Galaxy S5 represents an iconic design with essential and useful features to focus on delivering the ultimate smartphone on the market today through people inspired innovation.”

Pricing for the Galaxy S5 hasn’t been announced yet, but chances are it’ll retail for about $650 when it comes out. The official Galaxy S5 release date is slated for April, somewhat later than originally anticipated.

“The S5 will deliver some of the industry’s most exciting new features and innovations, and we believe that combined with the strength and quality of our LTE network across Europe, our long standing partnership with Samsung will continue to optimize the way our consumers access their favorite digital content and services…We’re excited to work with Samsung again to deliver this latest wave of innovation into the hands of our customers.”
