Ouya Cash Injection Revised Release Date: Is Android Game Worth $15 Million Investment?

By Staff Reporter | May 09, 2013 03:08 PM EDT

The Android game console Ouya will be delayed because it received a remarkable $15 million cash injection by a venture capital firms. The investors include “Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, the same firm that originally backed Electronic Arts, and includes other great investors such as Mayfield Fund, NVIDIA (who also makes the chips inside of OUYA), Shasta Ventures (who backed great hardware companies like Nest), and Occam Partners.” There console which was expected on June 4th will now be pushed back to June 25th since the developers now have more money to spend to fix issues.

The cash injection comes after Ouya was able to raise $7 million on Kickstarter. There are some serious people backing the console. What are gamers going to be getting in return for all this investment? In terms of hardware:

We’ve outfitted OUYA with NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor, 1GB of RAM, and 8GB of internal storage (expandable via USB). So don’t hold back. Whether you use WiFi or Ethernet, download games or stream your favorite videos or music apps in beautiful 1080p HD. And since OUYA is the first totally open video game console, we welcome you to unscrew it and have a look around.

In terms of games and apps:

As of 7:59 p.m. PT, there are already 104 published games on OUYA (all still free to try), like Final Fantasy III and some new surprises we think you’ll love: Beast Boxing Turbo, Stalagflight, Knightmare Tower, and even one called Save the Puppies. There are already a few entertainment apps, too. You can watch the TV shows and movies you already own with XBMC and Flixster, or watch games streamed through TwitchTV.

There are a lot of people counting on the success of this console, are they making a wise investment? After all, it is still possible that Ouya may fall short of the funding it needs. Launching and marketing a new game console is epxensive but Ouya has clearly impressed a lot of people because more than 12,000 developers have registered to make Ouya games.

The Ouya will be available on Amazon, Best Buy, Game, GameStop, Target and Ouya.tv for $99.99 with additional controllers costing $49.99. Only time will tell if Ouya will be a success but there seems to be some strong talent and some smart people backing it.
